JOB TITLE:  Bus Driver
                   Transportation Department
 
REPORTS TO: Transportation Director                

  
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
A Bus Driver is responsible for safely driving students to and from school on a schedule assigned by the Transportation Director .
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Required:

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B)
  • State Bus Driver’s Certification course
  • Successful completion of behind-the-wheel training course and discipline management procedures

 
Preferred:

  • High School Diploma or GED from an accredited school

 
 
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Commercial Driver License – Class A or B with the (P) Passenger and (S) School Bus endorsements plus 2 years experience driving an automobile
  • Acceptable motor vehicle record and criminal history
  • Must pass an annual physical examination by designated health professional and paid for by the District.
  • Have an interest in and liking for children and young adults.
  • Possess mental maturity and emotional stability to operate a school bus safely despite distractions from sometimes loud and boisterous students.
  • Must have the ability to understand verbal and written instructions in English



MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Drive students to and from school safely.
  2. Abide by the time schedule of assigned route(s).
  3. Obey all traffic laws and department policies.
  4. Maintain student discipline on the bus in a positive and caring manner.  Work with school administrators to resolve cases of misbehavior.
  5. Load and unload students as required to maintain daily schedule using hand operated door mechanism.
  6. Be able to perform emergency bus evacuation of students on bus.   Walk to the rear of bus, exit the rear door, and/or lifting students in emergency situation.
  7. Maintain current route maps and folders.  It is the driver’s responsibility to maintain current folder schedule time and have all changes approved by the supervisor.
  8. Maintain seating charts for elementary and middle school students.
  9. Maintain clean bus interior.
  10. Maintain appropriate level of fuel.
  11. Administer basic first aid as trained when necessary.
  12. Is responsible for being at work on time every day.
  13. Communicate clearly

 
 
WORKING CONDITIONS: 
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands:  physical mobility, prolonged sitting, repetitive hand and arm motions, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.  This position will also require traveling within the district. Mental demands: Maintain emotional control, ability to effectively communicate in both oral and written in English for safety reasons. Environmental Conditions: Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperature (hot and cold) and vehicle fumes.
